Martyn White: Lee Bradbury, the Hawks gaffer

Hawks 0-0 Dartford; Full match report

Havant and Waterlooville were held to a 0-0 draw against the bookmaker’s joint favourites for the league in Dartford in what was a phrenetic and physical encounter at Westleigh Park. Hawks manager Lee Bradbury was forced into one change from the 3-2 midweek win against Eastbourne as Matt Tubbs came in for Alfie Rutherford who suffered a knock during the Tuesday night encounter.

The first 15 minutes the Hawks looked like the side on top with many chances in the opening quarter with the first chance after 2 minutes as the ball is played into Jason Prior who then plays it down into Theo Lewis but Lewis couldn’t find the connection and the ball would go out for a goal kick. Minutes later the Hawks would win a free-kick which Theo Widdrington fired into the penalty area onto Ed Harris who’s headed effort flicked over the post. Before the opening 10 minutes were up Wes Fogden had the first golden chance for the Hawks as his curled effort from all of 20 yards out would be saved by Deren Ibrahim in the Dartford goal.

Dartford, though would show why they are to some bookies, the favourites to take the Vanarama National League South title as a long throw-in by Richard Sho-Silva caused some problems in the Hawks penalty area with Ryan Hayes having an effort but it would be saved by Ryan Young in the Hawks goal.

Before the half-hour mark the Hawks had a penalty appeal turned down as Jason Prior during a Hawks attack went to ground the Referee deemed it perfectly legal with play moving on. As the first half ended the momentum shifted once more following a spell where Dartford would find themselves on top, the Hawks would have a spell on top with the first-half ending somehow 0-0.

HALF TIME: HAWKS 0-0 DARTFORD

The Second half would get underway amid a wonderful afternoon on the South Coast and following this summer it would somewhat a rarity to see the sun and all 775 supporters who were in attendance would soak up every second of it, the same would be said for the second half at Fort Westleigh.

It would take 10 minutes for the first key talking point of the second half as Rory Williams played the ball into the penalty area but Tom Bonner headed the ball back into the ‘keeper Ibrahim. Minutes later the Hawks would come calling once more but the Darts were able to clear the effort.

On the hour mark Dartford had the closest chance any side would have to break the deadlock as a header by their skipper Eliot Bradbrock forced a point blank, reaction save out of Ryan Young with the showstopper bringing ringing applause around Westleigh Park. And Dartford would come close 5 minutes later as Warren M’Fula’s effort would go just wide of the target.

The Hawks would once more be defending a point against the Kent based outfit as the ball gets put into the penalty area but Wes Fogden being first to the ball and sniffing out the danger. Then a minute later a Dartford free-kick was put into the penalty area with Sho-Silva’s penalty area header saved by Ryan Young in the Hawks goal.

FULL-TIME: HAWKS 0-0 DARTFORD

With the league campaign 3 games old, the Hawks would find themselves unbeaten amid a tough start. Post-match Lee Bradbury said the game was “frustrating, hard and a game against a hard and well organised team. We didn’t play the best of Football today but we did dig in and we did defend well and we had to. The long throw (of Richard Sho-Silva) and them being a big, physical side, organised and they were hard to break down. I thought it was two stubborn teams really that weren’t willing to give in and it was always going to be a tight affair”.

Next up for the Hawks is some Monday Night Football action as they face Wealdstone away in what will be an intriguing tussle with the traditional Saturday-Monday factor blended into the melting pot.

Hawks survive late comeback to defeat the Sports

HAWKS 3-2 Eastbourne Borough; Match report

Jason Prior
Martyn White: Jason Prior won Man of the Match

It was the game that had everything. Goals, red cards, a nailed on result and nerves at the bitter death. But the Hawks more importantly than anything else left their perch with all 3 points safely tucked away.

Lee Bradbury would opt for an unchanged line-up from that which drew a blank with Chippenham on Saturday. Up against the Hawks gaffer was a former rival in Jamie Howell, once of Bognor, now plying his trade at Eastbourne. A rivalry built of respect by both men. And this chapter would be just as thrilling as the one previous.

The Hawks came out the traps like a Greyhound and would be rewarded by opening the scoring within 120 seconds. The Hawks with chance after chance in the penalty area following good link up play but Eastbourne thought they eluded danger when the ball was outside the box. That was until they saw Theo Widdrington set up to the mark and the king of the long-range effort from 25 yards out unleashed a thunderbolt right into the top left hand corner.

With the early advantage belonging to the Hawks they would be determined to do what Eastbourne on Saturday could not and that was to keep hold of it and the Hawks were showing all the signs of not just keeping hold of it but to double it as the ball from Rory Williams is played into Theo Lewis but if it was not for ex Hawk Ian Simpemba it probably would have been 2-0 to the Hawks.

But the Hawks would only have to wait another 11 minutes longer to see that lead doubled as the Hawks win a free kick in an opportune position and most crucially from striking distance. Theo Widdrington and Rory Williams were both lining the set piece up but it would the latter that would take. The referee blew his whistle, Williams stepped up and then he unleashed a beautiful curling effort into the top right hand corner and doubling the Hawks’ advantage midway through the opening period.

With the lead being two the Hawks seemed comfortable with Lee Bradbury’s side playing at the top of their game and they were wanting to exercise their prowess even further onto the Sports as 6 minutes from half time a Hawks corner is put into the penalty area where the ball was pinballed across the area but Theo Widdrington who already made his mark on the scoresheet went for a second but his effort was tipped over the bar by Bailey Vose.

HALF-TIME: HAWKS 2-0 EASTBOURNE BOROUGH

The second period would get underway amid a boisterous atmosphere at Westleigh Park with both sets of supporters making their allegiances known.

The first opportunity of the second half would fall Eastbourne’s way as Ian Simpemba’s free kick hit the crossbar and would be as far the closest that Howell’s side came to an opener.

4 minutes later the Hawks would make it three. Mike Carter plays a perfectly timed through ball to Jason Prior, who, onside rounds evades the defensive traps beats the goalkeeper and then slots the ball home beautifully to see the Hawks go 3-0 to the good. Game, set and match right? Not in this encounter, the drama has not got started yet.

With the clock striking the hour, the Hawks’ young whipper snapper striker Alfie Rutherford who on the attack is taken down by Simpemba, appeals ring round the ground for a red card as the Hawks faithful sighted him as the last man, however the referee Lee Brennen decided to dish out a yellow as his preferred course of action.

Eastbourne would be inflicted more misery a matter of minutes later as they were reduced to 10 men as after a second yellow card Gavin McCallum was given his marching orders by the man in black and once more the fans in Westleigh Park were thinking the result was nailed on.

But, no, Eastbourne and Jamie Howell would have a never say die attitude as after 88 minutes the ball is play out to substitute Ryan Worrall who would slot the ball past Ryan Young in the Hawks goal to reduce the arrears to two.

Minutes later Eastbourne seriously put the cat amongst the pigeons as in the first minute of time added on Will Hendon, formerly of Worthing from all of 25 yards out put the ball into the top right and the last few minutes would make the nerves start to jangle slightly.

FULL-TIME: HAWKS 3-2 EASTBOURNE BOROUGH

That win would be the 200th the Hawks would register in their National League South history. Post match when I spoke to Lee Bradbury I asked him about the game and said that it was the game that had everything. He reply “yeah, it did, I think for 90 minutes that’s the best we’ve played for a long time and that includes the end of last season, I think we moved the ball very well, caused them a lot of problems, fitness levels were great, scored some fantastic goals and then we switched off the last couple of minutes but to be honest that’s bitter sweet, having played so well for 90 minutes and then conceding two late goals but having said that if we came off with anything other than three points it would have been a travesty being honest.”

Next up for the Hawks is the visit of the bookmakers joint favourites to lift the title in Dartford and they will visit Fort Westleigh having drawn both of their opening two fixtures. With Pompey away we are hoping for a big crowd to come and cheer Bradbury’s boys across the winning line.

Henry’s weekend review:

My review on the opening weekend of the local footballing season:

“I spent Saturday at Hardenhuish Park seeing the Hawks being held to a 0-0 draw away to Chippenham. The pitch and the referee would be the two talking points of the game. The referee would be consitently inconsistant on both sides whilst the grass was so long Alan Titchmarsh was about to film a documentary on there.

Elsewhere Bognor showed real grit and doing what I call ‘bognoring’ the art of scoring a late winner. Having been pegged back to 2-2 up stepped Ollie Pearce to fire home a marvelous free-kick.

Baffins are top of the Wessex Premier League, even if by virtue of playing more games than the rest of the league. They started the season at Love Lane on Tuesday night in some style as they shocked Petersfield with a marvelous 3-1 win. With them not playing in the FA Cup this season they faced Hamble Club and holding to a 1-1 draw.

Finally for Pompey the Pitman machine just keeps rolling a brace for him and if he and Conor Chaplin keep firing this season they may just not be a threat to play-off push by why not the title? This time of years for dreaming right?”

Hawks held in physical opener

Ed Harris
Martyn White: Ed Harris in action for the Hawks

CHIPPENHAM TOWN 0-0 HAWKS; VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE SOUTH MATCH REPORT

Havant and Waterlooville have failed to stop the rot of a record which now stands at 1 win in the last 13 opening days as they were held to a goalless draw at Hardenhuish Park. Injuries played a key bearing on Lee Bradbury’s team line-up with injured players having to fill the bench for the season opener.

The season as always would start with the usual nerves and adrenaline and straight from kick-off on the opening day Theo Widdrington put our hearts in mouths as from the half way line he made an audacious opening effort which went just wide of the mark. But it would take 8 minutes for the first major chance of note as Chippenham’s Jake Andrews’ free kick is whipped into the penalty area with a Chippenham player heading the ball but Ryan Young was there to collect.

The 10 minutes that would follow would see chances being created for both sides as firstly Jason Prior plays a ball back into Alfie Rutherford and his shot is saved by Jared Thompson in the Bluebirds goal. Then a matter of moments later David Pratt had a go with his shot going wide.

At this point the Southern League champions were looking deadly. After 22 minutes Pratt once more had a chance on goal and with the Chippenham fans ready to cheer their opening goal of the season Rory Williams came with a superb last ditch tackle to keep the scores level.

Three minutes later came the key talking point of the game, the disallowed Chippenham Town goal. As Chippenham take a free-kick, it hits the wall but Pratt gets the ball and slots home impressively but only for him to be deemed offside. The goal chalked off and the Hawks given a reprieve.

But that would be as far as major chances on goal was concerned in the first half as the game turned into a fiery and physical encounter with the odd half chance here and there. At the interval, nothing could separate the sides at 0-0.

HALF-TIME: CHIPPENHAM 0-0 HAWKS

The second half would get underway amid a beautiful afternoon at Hardenhuish Park and the unfurling of the Hawks supporters flags for the new season with 40-50 fans making the trip from Hampshire.

It would take 5 minutes into the second period when David Pratt for Chippenham Town sprinted his way into the penalty but as he tried to cross the ball across the face of the goal it would be blocked by the Hawks defence.

And just like the first period it would be dominated by the physicality of the encounter. With the pitch and the length of the grass disrupting any efforts from either side to play ant kind of Football. The physicality would lead to Mike Carter going into the book on the hour mark after he slid in from behind on David Pratt.

The closest the Hawks came to scoring in the second half came 20 minutes from time when Rory Williams put a free kick into the penalty area and it would only be Jared Thompson in the goal that would stop last year’s player of the season open up the new campaign with a goal. A matter of moments later Chippenham had another opportunity to break the deadlock as a ball is put into the penalty area but it would elude Sandell and would come to nothing.

With the stoppage board reading four minutes at the end of the encounter, the finger nails which had been growing over the past few months were being given it’s first of a number of battering’s this season. The Hawks were determined up until the bitter end as George Barker with his electrifying pace trying get the ball into the penalty area to no avail.

FULL-TIME: CHIPPENHAM 0-0 HAWKS

Post-match the gaffer Lee Bradbury said that “I think it’s a point gained, it was very tough, big, strong and direct side that keep chucking it into your box, literally from throw ins and corners and you can see how they won the Southern prem last year. They’re organised with the slope and the grass along with the hill and wind. It was hard in the second half today, we had to defend for our lives and I think we’ve come away with a good point.”

Next up for his side is the opening league game of the season as Jamie Howell, fresh from leaving promoted Bognor Regis Town sends his Eastbourne Borough side to Westleigh Park looking to pick up 3 points after they squandered a 2-goal lead at home to Braintree to lose 3-2.

Manager’s Office; Chippenham Town on opening Day

Bradbury: “I want to be in the play-offs”.

The Hawks kick-off their Vanarama National League South season on Saturday as the Hawks face Chippenham Town at Hardenhuish Park, whom themselves celebrated promotion as they ran away with the Southern Premier League last term.

We caught up with manager Lee Bradbury after last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Moneyfields in the last friendly of 2017. I started of by asking him about his expectations for the new season which he replied:

“We would like to come in the top half, now it’s down to 7th I’d like to push for the play-offs, whether it’s realistic or not will remain to be seen. Not seen the Conference South last year but one of favourites in Ebbsfleet getting out of it and Maidenhead. People will look at it and say it’s an open league this year and it probably will be but there’s always surprises, always teams with more investment, so if we can come top half and around the play-offs that would be a decent season for us after just being promoted but me being me I want to be in the play-offs.”

Then I asked about the game between the Ryman and Southern League champions at Hardenhuish Park on Saturday:

“I’d rather it be at home, at the end of the day we got to go home and away all the time. We have a tough start, the first 6/7 games are against teams that are fancied to be there or thereabouts with the likes of Dartford, Chelmsford with Hampton and Richmond etc. We have got some good teams to play, but we have got to play them all at some point. After 6/8 games we will see roughly where we are.”

Lee was then asked about the preparations for the game:

“We trained Monday, looked at the DVD and see where we can improve and work on that through training this week. And when we’re not in, watch some games, get out and about and prepare ourselves for Saturday. We look forward to it, I’m not really a big fan of pre-season and I don’t like the game being honest, but it’s needed to get the lads sharp and fit and to leave them mentally and physically in the right frame of mind and I think we’re nearing that now and come Saturday we will be 100%.”

Money’s cash in against Hawks at a wet Westleigh Park

20480009_1919233884960840_1963711865111846010_n
Martyn White: Rory Williams in action

HAWKS 0-1 Moneyfields; full match report

Moneyfields left Westleigh Park stunned claiming a 1-0 victory and a scalp that will fill them with brimming optimism ahead of their first season in the Southern Football League. The Money’s would bring former Hawks Brett Poate and Sam Pearce with Hawks loanee Marley Ridge in their starting line-up. New signing Theo Widdrington also featured for Lee Bradbury’s side from the get-go.

The Hawks would have the better of the opening chances in the first quarter-hour of the game as first off Rory Williams would play the ball into Jason Prior and when in the penalty area the first touch would prove too heavy. Within the space of a minute later Andreas Robinson played a diagonal ball into Theo Lewis who plays the ball along to Jason Prior but his effort would find itself going wide.

As the half grew and the rain at a wet and grey skied Westleigh Park the Hawks would give Moneyfields more scares in the penalty area as after 20 minutes of the tie the ball would move forward, reaching Theo Lewis whose effort goes wide of the mark. But a matter of minutes later Andreas Robinson who was the standout Hawks player in the first half played the ball out to Wes Fogden who then played the ball across the penalty area into Jason Prior with his initial effort saved on the line by the impressive Moneyfields ‘keeper Mowthorpe and then with Prior trying to unleash a second effort Curtis de Costa would get the ball away for Moneyfields.

Then after 35 minutes Westleigh Park almost saw a moment that only David Beckham could replicate as former Hawk Sam Pearce on his former ground from 55 yards out saw Ryan Young off his line and decided to unbridle an audacious attempt on goal with Young ensuring the effort stayed clear from the back of the net.

Before the half was out the Hawks were looking once more to break the deadlock Theo Lewis played the ball into Matt Tubbs but once more Mowthorpe would be the Money’s hero.

HALF-TIME: HAWKS 0-0 MONEYFIELDS

The second half would begin amidst another hurling shower with the rain becoming heavier as the second half went on the patters becoming thuds on the roof of the main stand at Westleigh Park.

It was a quiet opening to the period as well as both sides were seemingly sparring with each other out but after 5 minutes of feeding each other the Hawks would have the opening opportunity of the second half as the ball is placed into Matt Tubbs but his effort would go over the bar.

But it would be the visitors who would have the next best chance as on loan Hawk Marley Ridge would play the ball into Ryan Pennery with the former Baffins Milton Rovers man turned but his shot would go wide of the mark.

Theo Lewis
Martyn White: Theo Lewis came close twice in quick succession

But it wouldn’t take long before the Hawks would have another opportunity as Andreas Robinson’s ball is deflected and by luck would find Theo Lewis, Lewis in front of goal on the edge of the penalty area gave it a go but the best he could do is fire wide. Moments later the Hawks would be in again as Rory Williams played the ball across the penalty area to Theo Lewis but the shot saved once more by Mowthorpe. The former Chelsea scholar coming close twice in quick succession.

65 minutes in the deadlock would be broken with Westleigh Park reduced to near silence as a slip by the Hawks defence would let Ryan Pennery in and with the goal gaping at his mercy he would slot the ball into the right hand corner to give Moneyfields a shock lead at Westleigh Park with the ground being stunned and realising that a shock maybe in the making on a wet afternoon.

The introduction of Brian Stock following the Moneyfields goal would give the Hawks the reigniting in which they needed in the search of an equaliser. After 5 minutes on the field of play he found himself 30 yards out, in plenty of space and the goal at his mercy, decided to take a shot in which only the slightest of deflections from the Moneyfields defence would stop from going in the back of the net. Then moments later he would have a second effort blocked by the automatic thinking of Jamie Ford.

But following the goal, it would be the lighting of the Money’s blue touch paper as they grew in confidence as the final stages grew nearer and nearer, giving them the opportunity to pull of the tremoring shock. But before time was up the Hawks would have one more effort on goal as Alfie Rutherford darted from the half way line into the penalty area and despite having options in the area felt he earnt the right to shoot and when the opportunity arose he would only find his effort blocked by the Moneyfields defence.

FULL-TIME: HAWKS 0-1 MONEYFIELDS

Next up for the Hawks is the opening game of the Vanarama National League South season as they face a trip to Chippenham Town who ran out winners themselves of the Southern Premier League. But the Hawks will be looking to spoil their party as the return to the sixth tier for what will busy business as usual.

HAWKS V MONEYFIELDS MANAGER’S OFFICE:

Hawks boss previews the visit of Money’s!

BRADDERS V BOGNOR
Lee Bradbury in the dugout at Nyewood Lane

We welcome you back into the Manager’s office ahead of the Hawks’ final pre-season game against Moneyfields at Westleigh Park. After the game against Horndean on Tuesday evening we spoke to Lee Bradbury about the game against Dave Carter’s side.
I asked him what did he expect from the game in which he said “a tough game. They will be physical and hardworking, a lot of ex Gosport players that will want to knock Havant and Waterlooville off their perch. They will come and give it a real good go and hopefully it’s competitive but not over the top and I though it was right on the line tonight (VS Horndean), it was very competitive and done in the right way and a good pre-season game for us.”

Walking football team need Goalie

Hawks Academy photoThe Havant and Waterlooville Walking Football side are looking for a Over 60 goalkeeper for the walking football side for the upcoming season. Due to injury and retirements the side have been forced to use outfields players to go in goal to no avail. Those that would like to take part should contact Shaun Gale or turn up at one of the training sessions at South Downs College on Mondays and Thursday’s.

Below is the full statement put on the club forum:

“Your friendly Many Shades of Grey, the Hawks’ famous Walking Football team need an old goalkeeper.
Following our original first-choice goalkeeper retiring from competitive events, then our next first-choice goalkeeper suffering a stroke and being advised to keep his head out of harm’s way by his specialist, we are short of an experienced and enthusiastic goalkeeper for our 60+ side.
We have a keeper for our 50+ side (thanks John), but when we enter 55+, or 60+ competitions, we now have to put a volunteer outfield player in goal.
And we’re not very good at it.

If you fit the bill, give Shaun Gale a tinkle on 02392 787822, or just turn up and play at one of our training sessions at South Downs College, 10.45 – 12.00 Mondays and Thursdays. You’ll be made very welcome.”
