Deacon’s World Matchplay tips

World Matchplay

It’s a close call this year but here are my tips for Blackpool success!

The World Matchplay kicks off tomorrow at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens and what is the tightest and strongest field in the history of the competition, I look at the runners and riders in this years event:

“It is hard to bet against the World Number 1 Michael van Gerwen, he has that same auora that Taylor has back in his prime where even top players can collapse at the altar when they hear the strains of Seven Nation Army. He seemingly wins everything despite the standard and the depth of threats being at its highest in the history of the sport. Gary Anderson will be looking to reverse a one semi-final record in Blackpool and is a threat wherever he goes. I think one man we are not talking about too much ahead of these championships is the flambuoyant Peter Wright. Winner of the UK Open in March and missed match darts against MVG to win the Premier League final a few months later. If he can produce his best then the best in the game may test the bitter sweet pill of defeat this week.

Phil Taylor goes into it as my tip and this is the reason why. When Taylor is truly motivated for something and he looks energetic he hardly loses. Look back to the Champions League last September the attitude he had for that considering the Auntie Beeb factor saw him lift the title and destroy the Green machine (van Gerwen) twice in a matter of days. If he feels the same in Blackpool only the World number 1 can wrestle the trophy away from him.

As an outside bet and a dark horse Michael Smith would be that name. He is starting to get into some decent form at a good time and a recent pick for 3 World Series events will only ever boost his confidence. He is along with Chizzy the best scorer in the game, however it is his finishing that’s often his downfall. If he can finish like he scores then he will take some stopping.”

The World Matchplay is LIVE on Sky Sports Action and Main event from 22-30 July.
